City's Best 2005 A
hidden treasure of When you drive into the strip mall home to Cala Lily Cafe, you might not believe the city's diners often count this spot among Pittsburgh's top eateries. Don't let the unassuming facade fool you, though; the interior is comfy and casual, with green plants and wrought-iron chairs giving the space a garden feel. The pan-European-style menu, meanwhile, comprises plenty of inventive goodies. Start with Poblano Chiles Relleno stuffed with Spanish "drunken" goat cheese or grilled portobello stuffed with seafood and artichokes. Then, move on to the house specialty, the paella de Alicante, a savory fusion of meats, shellfish and saffron rice. Other interesting entrees include pistachio-crusted tuna steak, pumpkin tortellini alfredo and wiener schnitzel. On the wine list you'll find a variety of international choices edited to match the creative dishes. Hey, even if you can't drop everything and board a jet to Europe, this spot should tide you over 'til you can.
